Most entrepreneurs in India or across the global think that trends in online shopping are changing. Entrepreneurs think that it is better to project their business via mobile applications rather than investing in website or web shop. There is a correlation between Screen Size and online shopping Behavior. Most of the ecommerce giants in India have started to promote their mobile platforms aggressively. Earlier this month a serial entrepreneur asked me that what are facts or data with respect to online shopping? Is it wise for me to invest in desktop friendly online shopping [larger Screen Size] or standalone mobile application [Smaller Screen Size]? So lets find an answer for this.

Setting up an Online Shop or Ecommerce has huge opportunity as online consumer spending continues to increase. It is important to note that people are spending more during festive season such as Black Friday, Boxing Day, Diwali etc. I assume that most companies come up with offers, which prompts people to spend.Most of the ecommerce players are launching short-term sales to prompt people to buy. And most ecommerce companies are customer friendly by having facilities such as Cash on delivery, next day delivery, return policy and more. Most people are trying out to buy once in Online and end up buying more over period of time.

One of the leading market research firms in the United Kingdom did a market survey on this. It is important to note that people still tend to prefer desktop or laptop for online shopping. When it comes to making a transaction, people prefer a larger screen to check details such as shipping policy, refund policy, shipping address, promotional code and more details that matters the most for people. People have the option to see these details on a single screen. Data also suggest that people tend to browse more in PC or laptop. People even spend more when they make transactions in PC or laptop. There could be many Challenges for an Ecommerce Company behind this shopping behavior. I could think off poor data connection, poor mobile user-friendly interface and more.

While Desktop continues to dominate sales and average order value, in terms of traffic there are more users who tend to visit the web shop via smartphones and tablets. As I mentioned in my previous post The App Way , people tend to have their phone with them. The other day I saw a woman who was browsing amazon during her walk. Consumers are taking advantage of mobile devices for anywhere and anytime shopping.
Earlier I have posted an article on cart abandonment and how to capitalise on Cart Abandonment and Browse Abandonment . The market research firm has commented that shopping cart abandonment is relatively steady for the past three years. This means that the UK online companies are doing a good job in making people buy by offering guest shopping, wish list and more.

So now after going through the data and the explanations, what do you think? Well, Understand your customers. It is important to show your presence across all channels. It is also important to engage your customers. There is a hug gap between perception and reality. Most ecommerce companies think that they understand their customers well but customers says that ecommerce companies only understand 22% and only 21% of marketing messages towards customers are relevant. Create a mobile application that is user friendly. Install a data analytics system into both desktop friendly online platform and mobile application. Keep on analyzing and optimize. Optimize and Optimize. An entrepreneur should have many keys to success. This certainly is one of the keys to success. Happy Selling!
